Low Power to the People: a conversation about the future of community radio

On December 6th, please join the Prometheus Radio Project, PhillyCAM, and our community partners as we host Christina Dunbar-Hester, Professor of Journalism and Media Studies at Rutgers University and author of the newly released book, Low Power to the People: Pirates, Protest, and Politics in FM Radio Activism. Professor Dunbar-Hester will be in Philadelphia to discuss her book and engage with local activists, independent journalists, and other community members.

“Never mind the Orwellian forces of corporate radio—a new generation is quietly tinkering its way toward a far more democratic world. In this clear-eyed, closely observed account, Christina Dunbar-Hester gives us a compelling glimpse of that generation and with it, a new way to see how technologies and people can make one another political.”

- Fred Turner, Associate Professor of Communication, Stanford University

Following a brief talk by the visiting author, we will open up the conversation to the broader themes of Low Power to the People, including local media activism, social justice organizing, and the recent expansion of community radio in Philadelphia and around the country. We will also hear from leaders of new local community radio stations, as they share with us the stories behind their stations, their future plans, and more.

We hope you'll join us for this unique opportunity to participate in a critical dialogue at the intersection of technology, social justice activism, and local media.
